A catalogue of the Safety Catch exhibition, staged at the UTS Gallery in August 2006. The Safety Catch project invited a group of Australian designers to respond to the issue of safety and security. Their reactions were delivered through the medium of product design, the collection of responses formed the exhibition.
The Australian designers worked separately and each was required to submit a three dimensional design as their proposal. The aim was to work in the space that lies between the ordinary and the shocking, to create a design that not only considers the usual design parameters such as aesthetics and user-friendliness but also challenges conventional values and proposes new scenarios, new strategies to engage with what has been referred to as critical design.
The purpose of the exhibition served to formalise the work in a presentable context and by extension, disseminate design to engage visitors into debate, discussion and reflection.
The designers participating in this exhibition were: Korban Flaubert, Bernabei Freeman, Robert Foster, Ruth McDermott, Berto Pandolfo, Stefan Lie, Adam Goodrum and Schamburg Alvisse.
