The financial management of inalienable customary land in Australia and the South Pacific
The APCCRPR team brings a depth of experience in finding new, practical and workable solutions in the management of customary land. Members have a background in exploring and seeking consensus on where indigenous landowners want to be located between the extremes of traditional customary ways and Western Materialism.
Regionally, APCCRPR members have been involved in advising and working with, amongst others, the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat; the Secretariat of the Pacific Community; AusAID; the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations; UN Habitat; International Federation of Surveyors (FIG); and the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation.
In 2007, APCCRPR members undertook a major Review of Financial Management of Customary and other Land in the Pacific on behalf of the Land Management and Conflict Minimisation initiative of the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat.
From an Australian perspective, the APCCRPR has initiated a politically controversial project that envisions an optimal resolution to the Native Land debate. It investigates how to ensure the continued economic growth of the City of Sydney under a restitution model that places the superior interest in the land (and buildings thereon) in the stewardship of the customary indigenous guardians (rather than the State or Crown).
