UTS Photography and Situated Media Competition

UTS is on the search for the next generation of photographers and situated media designers.

Three prizes (totalling $2000) will be awarded to the best photographers and situated media designers currently studying Year 11 or 12.

Submit your entries by 5pm, Friday 23 July 2010. Finalists will have their work exhibited at UTS and the winners will be announced in mid-August.

What are we looking for?

  • Original work that makes a social, cultural or personal comment
  • Projects that redefine and/or combine the disciplines of photography and situated media
  • Quality, conceptual clarity, technical ability and originality

While photography is an established discipline, situated media can be defined in many ways: site-specific installations, performances or interactive media that respond to their environment or location. This type of work could be classified as art, performance, architecture, technology, interaction, media design, etc. Look up the work of Olafur Eliasson, Casey Reas, Cindy Sherman, Nam June Paik, Anish Kapoor, John Maeda, Gordon Matta-Clark. Use your imagination and get to work!

Submission requirements

Submissions are limited to one original photograph. For situated media designers, we suggest creating a single photographic composition that conveys the nature of your original situated media installation.

For situated media designers, if it is possible to exhibit your actual work at UTS, please include information that is as specific as possible about technical (hardware/software/materials) and spatial requirements, as well as what you could contribute to a presentation of your work and what would need to be provided by UTS. We will endeavour to exhibit finalists' works where possible and may supply standard multimodal display tools, e.g. data projection, monitor, some game/motion controllers, computer, etc. If we can't, then the image documentation of finalists' works will be exhibited.
