Recognitionofpriorlearning
If you have already studied subject areas in our degrees, you may receive Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). Through RPL, you may receive an exemption for some of the subjects in a course. RPL does not guarantee or imply that you will obtain a place in a DAB course.
When to apply for RPL
Apply for RPL when you first enrol into the course you would like exemptions in. If this is not possible, make your application no later than the end of the second week of the first semester of study at UTS.
Where possible, we will assess RPL for international and postgraduate coursework students before admission and it will form part of the formal offer of place at UTS. Where we cannot fully assess an RPL application, we will tell you the minimum level of RPL which will be accepted, as part of the formal offer of place at UTS.
How to apply for RPL
Apply by submitting an Application Form for Recognition of Prior Learning (pdf, 27kb).
You also need to provide evidence, including certified copies of your academic transcripts, course or subject outlines, or details of your work experience. Lodge your application form at the UTS Student Centre, Building 6, Level 4.
RPL from previous university studies
If you have an Australian Bachelor's Degree, you can apply for exemption from 24 credit points of non-core electives.
Exemptions will not be granted for subjects taken more than ten years prior to enrolment in the relevant DAB course. For example you must have undertaken a subject, or graduated, no earlier than 1998 for the 2008 student intake.
RPL from TAFE
DAB has established a list of approved exemptions for several TAFE courses, known as articulated courses. You must have completed a TAFE qualification at the level specified in order to be considered for RPL.
If you have not completed an articulated TAFE course, or have a qualification from a non-articulated TAFE courses, your RPL application will be assessed an individual basis.
You must have completed your TAFE course no longer than three years prior to enrolment in the DAB course. For example, for the 2008 intake of students at UTS, you should still have been studying at TAFE in 2004 (not 2003 or earlier).
