Undergraduate
I am studying at another university, can I transfer to UTS?
Students do not "transfer" between universities, however it is possible to move to UTS by applying in the usual way through the University Admission Centre (UAC) as a non-current school leaver.
There is no mid-year intake for DAB undergraduate courses - applications will be for the commencement of 2010.
If your application is successful and you are offered a place you should then apply for exemptions (Credit recognition - CR) based on the study you have successfully completed in your previous course. The amount of CR granted to you will depend on how closely your previous course is aligned to your new UTS course and usually only up to a maximum of one-third of the credit points required to complete your new UTS course.
How do I apply as a mature age student?
Mature age applicants come under the more general category of Non-Year 12 Applicants.
When applying for study for 2010 you are a Non-Year 12 Applicants if you are not completing your HSC at school or TAFE in 2009.
You will apply through the University Admission Centre (UAC) carefully following the instructions for Non-Year 12 Applicants as advised in the UAC guide.
The UAC Guide for next year will be available in early August - this can be purchased from newsagents or accessed online through UAC.
I am doing my HSC this year how do I apply for a DAB course?
Australian and New Zealand Citizens, Permanent Residents and Holders of an Australian permanent resident humanitarian visa must apply through the University Admission Centre (UAC).
See the UAC Guide for all details including application closing dates.
This guide will be available in early august - this can be purchased from newsagents or accessed online through the UAC website.
Year 12 applicants can apply to UAC using either Apply-By-Web or Apply-By-Telephone.
Places will be offered based on the Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR) you are awarded.
What will the ATAR be for the next intake?
No one can predict ATARs for the next intake just as you cannot predict the ATAR you will receive.
Because of the possibility that an ATAR may move up or down from the previous year, you should not try to predict whether you will make the cut-off or not but rather enter the course you would most prefer to do followed by your next preference and so on up to a maximum of nine courses.
I do not have a ATAR can I still apply for an undergraduate course?
If you are over 20 at 1 March, and have no Year 12 or tertiary/post secondary qualifiactions you may apply on the basis of the special Tertiary Admissions Test (Multiple Choice version).
I have just been offered a place in a new undergraduate course, can I defer?
The term Deferment as used in the UAC Guide means that you have received an offer to enrol in an undergraduate course but you have been given permission to delay the start of the course until the next intake. For DAB undergraduate courses this will mean deferring commencement to the start of the following year because DAB does not have a midyear intake. Once you have been admitted into a course it is then too late to Defer your offer, so you must carefully follow the instructions on applying for deferment which will be included in your offer from UAC. It is also extremely important that you follow the procedure on how and when to re-apply for your deferred course.
UTS uses the term Leave of Absence to mean a period of leave which may be approved after a student has completed and passed at least one subject in a course. See Applying for Leave of Absence.
When is the closing date for undergraduate applications?
DAB does not have a mid-year intake for its undergraduate courses.
For closing dates for applications for the next intake please refer to the UAC Guide.
Postgraduate
What are the entry requirements for postgraduate study in DAB courses?
Within each program, courses may be offered at the level of Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma or Master's degree. Applicants can be made an offer if they possess a Bachelor's degree, Masters degree, Graduate Diploma or Graduate Certificate. If applicants do not formally meet these requirements for an offer, they must submit a Personal Statement and a Curriculum Vitae.
How do I apply for postgraduate (coursework) study?
All applications for DAB postgraduate courses must be submitted through the University Admission Centre (UAC) using an online process.
Postgraduate applications for DAB courses requiring a compulsory Personal Statement (approx. 500 words) and Curriculum Vitae must be submitted directly to UTS using an online process.
What should I put in my personal statement?
Your Personal Statement should explain (in approximately 500 words) why you wish to study the course you are applying for. You need to critically reflect on your past educational, work and other experiences. Other experiences could include voluntary work, self-employment, travel or raising children.
If you are applying for a post-graduate Design or Animation degree, your statement must critically review one of your own designs, demonstrate an understanding of the specific nature of the course, and nominate a discipline in which you wish you undertake a major.
What do I need in my portfolio?
Your Portfolio needs to contain between five and ten pieces of original work showing your design ability. If you are applying for a Visual Communication degree, then your portfolio must contain a minimum of ten pieces.
Your portfolio may be submitted as colour photocopies, photos, CD-ROM, DVD, web sites or show reels. Please submit copies of your original work, as they may not be returned.
When is the closing date for postgraduate applications?
Please refer to UTS Admissions for the closing dates.
I have just been offered a place in a new postgraduate course, can I defer?
If you are offered a place in a postgraduate course you cannot defer this offer - you will therefore need to reapply for the course when you are ready to commence your studies.
If your original application was for an Autumn commencement you may reactivate your UAC application for Spring of the same academic year - in order for such an application to be considered all you need to do is change your UAC course code to reflect the code for Spring.
All other cases will require a new UAC application.
Other admission questions
Can I study any DAB course by distance study?
No, DAB courses and subjects are only offered with an internal attendance mode - this means that students will be required to attend all classes at UTS.
I am a new student, how do I accept my offer?
Before you come to an enrolment session you will need to accept your offer online and register for an enrolment session.
The Start at UTS website will provide you with all of the information you will need as a new student.
