Professor Clair Hughes
Born in Copenhagen and educated in Scotland, Clair Hughes graduated from the University of Bristol and the Courtauld Institute, London. Having taught at the higher education colleges of art in Britain and Japan for over twenty years, she also held the position of Professor of English and American Literature at the International Christian University of Tokyo. Recently retired, Professor Hughes has written several books on British Art and various articles on Henry James and Anita Brookner, including Henry James and the Art of Dress in 2001 (Palgrave) and Dressed in Fiction in 2005 (Berg).
Associate Professor Margaret Maynard
Associate Professor Margaret Maynard teaches art history, art writing and fashion at The University of Queensland. She is an acknowledged expert on fashion and dress studies in Australia and has published widely in the area. Her publication record also includes work on colonial art and photography. Her most recent book is Dress and Globalisation 2004 (Manchester University Press). She is currently working on a cultural history of 20th century Australian fashion photography, funded by an Australian Research Council Discovery Grant. She is Editor of Volume Seven: Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific, of The Encyclopedia of World Dress and Fashion (Berg, forthcoming).
